Apprentice Lucy shortlisted for prestigious awards

Posted On: 21/03/2018 04:13:00

Lucy Cowe gained great grades when she took her GSCE and AS Levels, but she knew she didn’t want to go to university after leaving her Mansfield school.

The 18 year old worked for a short time at an estate agency but then she came across an apprenticeship role at Fidler & Pepper Solicitors.

That was seven months ago and in that time her work has impressed partners at the firm and she is now a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category of the Mansfield and Ashfield 2020 Business Awards.

Lucy said: “I would 100 per cent recommend that people look at the apprenticeship route when starting their career. It’s a way of learning from people in a hands on manner, and you earn at the same time. Here at Fidler & Pepper you can learn from people and get stuck in to working on live projects.”
And she added: “I am looking forward to the 2020 awards, not just because I am a finalist but because I am also looking forward to hearing the stories of other people too and how the have got on in business.”

Lucy was recently a finalist in the CT Skills Made in the Midlands Apprentice of the Year awards, helping to showcase the work of apprentices and the role of employers in developing staff of the future.

Joanne Godson, People and Operations manager at Fidler & Pepper, said: “We recruit, train and retain our staff as part of our Grow Our Own people development strategy. Put simply, that means we like to recruit the very best staff and help them to grow and develop to meet their own career goals and to support our business goals.

“We have a structured development plan which allows members of our team to move up and across to other roles and this is supported by internal and external training and nationally recognised qualifications.”

Joanne added: “We’re pleased that Lucy’s work has been recognised by being shortlisted.”
Over the years, more than 30 of Fidler & Pepper’s staff have successfully completed apprenticeships, gaining over 50 qualifications between them. Currently, there are eight apprentices across the business.
