From Saturday helpers, to a cut above

Posted On: 04/07/2018 11:14:00

When Saturday boy Paul Sanderson started sweeping up hair off the floor at a barbers shop in Mansfield, he enjoyed the tasks he was given, and the fact he was earning a few pennies.

Fast forward 40 years and thousands of haircuts, and Paul has now owned the shop, Campions, in Church Street, since 2000.

He has eight people who work at the premises, including Jo Parkes (36), who is also celebrating a milestone.

Jo, a mum of two, also started at the shop as a Saturday helper. But, after training, decided actually cutting hair wasn’t for her. She did like organising and talking to customers though, so she moved into a receptionist role.

And she is now celebrating 20 years at the shop.

Paul said: “I love what I do. I did the Saturday job and stayed on, taking over in 2000. There must have been thousands of haircuts I’ve done over the years, some of which I’ve liked doing, others not so much - like the trend for curtains.

“Jo is a real asset here, as she is great with the customers. There are a lot of hairdressers in Mansfield, but we continue to get new customers and we have a lot of regulars too.”

Jo added: “I qualified as a hairdresser but after a while, I realised it wasn’t for me. Then the opportunity came up to work on reception. We like to have a laugh, but we are also very professional.

“You get to know people, and you get to know their families too. We see the children of children we used to see years ago.”

Retired teacher Terry Holt (81), has been using Campions for around 25 years. He said: “It’s a good place to come to. The staff are warm and friendly, and you get a good haircut too.”
