Mansfield is a great place to enjoy an evening out – it’s official!

After two visits by assessors from the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) and the submission of a wide range of evidence, the town has been awarded prestigious Purple Flag status.

Purple Flag is an accreditation scheme that recognises excellence in the management of town centres at night. It can be seen as the equivalent of the Blue Flag awarded to good beaches.

A team involving representatives from Mansfield Association of Licensed Venues (MALV), Mansfield BID, Mansfield District Council, Mansfield Partnership Against Crime (MPAC) and the police was set up in 2013 to work towards the award. Many other organisations which contribute to the town centre experience have also played a role in the work too.

Members of the group will travel to Surbiton in Surrey early in November where ATCM will hand over the Purple Flag award and then celebrate the night-time economy as a lever of economic and social prosperity.

Achieving Purple Flag status will be of huge benefit to Mansfield; physical improvements have already been made, changes have been made to policing and projects introduced to increase safety and confidence.

The positive publicity and increased visitors that are expected to result will help create jobs and an increased vibrancy about town.

Speaking on behalf of the Purple Flag steering group, Sarah Nelson, Mansfield Business Improvement District Manager, says: “Everyone who has been involved in the work to achieve Purple Flag is absolutely delighted.. The hard work has paid off.

“Mansfield has an outdated reputation for being somewhere to avoid in the evening and the Purple Flag award will help prove to everyone that this is definitely not the case.

“There is a wide range of activities to enjoy in a safe and friendly environment and achieving Purple Flag will prove to everyone that this is the case.

“We hope those who already enjoy its theatre, library, heritage, restaurants and leisure facilities will help us raise the flag by telling as many people as possible what a great place Mansfield is.”

A celebration of receiving the award that everyone can join in with is being planned to take place in the town centre in November.
